Introduction
Two clients walk into our Johannesburg workshop. Both want a bathroom mirror. Both want clean lines and high quality. But one chooses a beveled edge, the other goes frameless with a polished edge. Both are right. Here’s how to know which is the right choice for your space.
What Is a Beveled Mirror?
A beveled mirror features a ground and polished angled edge — typically 25mm to 50mm wide — around the perimeter of the glass. The angle catches light from multiple directions, creating a subtle prismatic effect that adds visual interest and a sense of depth. Beveled mirrors have been associated with quality craftsmanship for over a century, and they remain one of the most requested finishes in our Johannesburg studio.
Beveled mirrors suit traditional, heritage, transitional, and luxury interior styles. They add a sense of detail and craftsmanship to a space without requiring an ornate frame. They work particularly well in bathrooms, entrance halls, and formal living rooms where quality and refinement are the design priority.
What Is a Frameless Polished Edge Mirror?
A frameless mirror with a polished edge has its raw glass edge ground and polished to a smooth, clean finish. There is no bevel and no frame — simply pristine, clear glass with a refined edge. The result is thoroughly contemporary: minimal, clean, and unobtrusive.
Frameless polished edge mirrors suit minimalist, Scandi, contemporary, and industrial interior styles. They are the default choice for gym and studio installations, and they work equally well in modern kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms where fuss-free design is the priority.
The Practical Difference
Beyond aesthetics, there are two practical considerations. First, beveled mirrors are slightly heavier for the same glass thickness, because the bevel removes a small amount of glass from the edge. This has no structural implications for standard sizes but is worth noting for very large pieces. Second, polished edge mirrors are generally faster to produce and more cost-effective, while beveling adds a moderate premium reflecting the additional machining time.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose a beveled mirror if: your interior has traditional or transitional elements, you want a sense of detail and craftsmanship without a heavy frame, you’re fitting a bathroom or entrance hall with a classic feel, or you want your mirror to have its own visual identity.
Choose a frameless polished edge mirror if: your interior is contemporary or minimalist, you want the mirror to disappear into the space rather than make a statement, you are fitting a gym, studio, or commercial space, or you prioritise clean lines and simplicity above all else.
